18.1 was fun, 18.2 is going to burn

We're not saying it, Dave Castro himself says it in the live announcement of the second WOD of the Open CrossFit Games 2018 . Live from Pittsburg, in the United States, the brains of the world qualifier exercises revealed this morning on 18.2 .

18.2 and 18.2 A

The second Open event is made up of two parts:
18.2. For Time with Time Cap of 12 minutes Staircase of 1 to 10 repetitions Dumbbells squats (22.5kg/35kg) Bar Facing Burpees 18.2 A. Within the remaining time 1RM Clean

Castro already made it clear on his Instagram track. This second exercise is going to burn, especially in the knees .

How to face 18.2?

If you have seen the performance of the invited athletes at the Live Announcement, you will have seen that both Noah Ohlsen and Patrick Vellner have used a similar strategy: speed in the 18.2 , either in the squats or in the burpees, to gain rest time for the 18.2A. Therefore, the best thing you can do for this second workout is:

  • Mentalize that the exercise is going to be harder as you advance in the reps
  • Try to go fast in the first part to save time
  • Go faster in the movement that you are best at
  • Avoid no reps to avoid wasting time
  • Keep calm if they sing you a no rep
  • After finishing the first part, do not wait more than a minute to start the clean
  • Start looking for the maximum with 60% of your RM
  • And breath
Remember that when you reach 18.2A you will already be very tired, your knees will be very stressed and it will be difficult for you to breathe . It is important to remember to breathe slowly to catch your breath during the cleans and thus focus your attention on lifting well.
A trick for lifting a heavy clean: Do not relax in the squat, activate your glutes and hamstrings and expel the air on the way up. And if you feel like screaming, scream! You'll see how you go up without problems

What material should you use for this WOD?

We recommend using the same material that Ohlsen and Vellner have worn in the WOD. For the first part:
  • knee pads to protect your knees during burpees
  • grips to maintain grip on the dumbbells
For the second part:
  • weightlifting shoes for better stability in the clean
  • tape on thumbs to protect them from hook grip on the bar
  • Wrist guards to prevent wrist injuries when carrying the bar
  • belt to stabilize the lumbar in the squat
However, common sense is best. Use the material that you normally use in your classes and with which you feel most comfortable.

Olhsen versus Vellner. Who won 18.2?

We've already seen the professionals in action and you've probably thought "Easy!". More for them than for you, but yes. The 18.2 has been easy for both athletes . The American Noah Ohlsen, four of the 2017 CrossFit Games, performed the dumbbell squats and burpees in 4.05 minutes; while his Canadian opponent, Patrick Vellner, in 4.17 minutes. What have we learned from his performance? That if you are tall, you will be slower in squats. It was what hurt Vellner, two-time bronze medalist at the Games (2016 and 2017); in addition to wanting to accelerate in the last burpees and accumulate two no reps that harmed him in terms of time. However, Vellner took the win in 18.2A. Both came out weighing 102kg on the first load. After five lifts, Ohlsen made a mark of 142kg and Vellner 147kg. In this second part, it was seen that the Canadian was more comfortable with the weights and movement.

What advice do we get from this performance?

Both started the lifts with 60% of their RM . So it is better to start with a weight that is somewhat heavy but with which you are more comfortable , than to go directly to 90% and fail several times. Remember that you will already be tired and that your legs will not respond as well to heavy lifting. The 18.2A is more strategy than strength, after all.

General classification after 18.1

After the first event, we take a look at the classification of the Open CrossFit Games 2018 . In the men's category, first place goes to the Dane Nicolai Duus , with 487 reps (15 rounds and 7 T2B).
