The 2020 CrossFit Games season begins in no time, starting, as you already know, its new modality with the Open that will be held for the first time in October.
If the Games started in 2007, did you know that the first Open took place in 2011? Those most addicted to CrossFit surely know it, but we are going to review its history and the evolution of the exercises.
The first Open
In 2011, the first Open took place, the online qualification open to everyone to reach the CrossFit Games.
In this first edition, there were not five but six weeks of qualifiers and around 26,000 people signed up.

And 12, 15, ...
As you can see, WODs are very similar to what you can do any day in your box.
Of course, these are just the beginnings.
The second edition begins two traditions
2012 was the year in which Reebok entered as a sponsor, giving a very important push towards the internationalization of the sport (and the brand).
The WODs became five , carried out in five weeks , and at that time there were 69,000 people who tested their CrossFit skills.

And 12, 15, ...
And what traditions do these second Opens begin?
- That of repeating a WOD from the previous edition. Here, 12.5 is 11.6.
- And that in the last WOD there are Thrusters .
Don't you believe us? Look at 13.5, 14.5, 15.5, 16.5, 17.5, 18.5 and 19.5 and you will see that there are always Thrusters.
Over the years, new things appear
We are not going to review all the Open WODs but we are going to see the new features that were added year after year .
As the competition welcomed more participants, the level of the athletes became higher and, therefore, the demands in the Open as well.
Although many of us do them as a personal competition to measure our progress, feel the adrenaline of this experience and have a good time (after suffering), we must remember that the Open CrossFit Games are a qualifier to reach the final in the United States.
The Open 2013 does not provide many new features. Just repeat 12.4 for 13.4.
In 2014, a new execution modality was incorporated: For Time with a descending staircase of repetitions (21-18-15...) ; and a new exercise: rowing . 14.1 was 11.1.
In 2015, the WODs begin in two parts to complicate things a little more and not lose fun in the matter. Handstand Push Ups also appear; and 15.2 was 14.2.
In 2016, we have suffered with lunges or strides and WODs with internal cut-off time such as 16.2 that, if you did not finish the first part within the stipulated 4 minutes, it was over. 16.5 was 14.5.
2017, the year of the dumbbells . We also see the Round For Time modality appear that had not yet been applied in the Open. And 17.4 was 16.4.
2018 already marks the end of the Open as we have known it, especially with the Live Announcement that starred the crossfit elite live . The novelty of this edition was the appearance of the Handstand Walk and the popular vote for the last WOD that would be repeated each year. The 18.5 was 11.6/12.5 because the people decided it, and yes, it has Thrusters.
Open 2019, we say goodbye to the five weeks in the middle of the Easter holidays, we also say goodbye to the Live Announcements with real celebrities and we repeat 16.2 for 19.2.
And how many are already participating in the Open in 2019? If we only count the individual RXs, male and female, it adds up to a total of 325,684 people.
In eight years of Open, we have seen how exercises evolve towards more complex modalities that represent a real challenge for professionals and amateurs.
