With August comes the CrossFit Games . But the 2019 edition comes with many new features and unknowns that we were finally able to resolve on August 1, the first day of competition of the new type of the final in Madison.
Eliminations in all events
Indeed, the big doubt that we all had and for which many speculations were made is the classification modality of the athletes who managed to reach the final of the 2019 CrossFit Games .
The best crossfit athletes from around the world (144 men and 131 women) traveled to Madison to discover that all events have a score-based cutoff that allows them to advance to the next event.
Of course, we are talking about the individual mode of the competition since, for Teens and Masters, only the Top 10 of each age range and the Top 14 of teams could qualify , through the Open. Furthermore, there are no qualifying rounds that require them to carry out all the planned events, as has been done until now.
Event 1: The first 75 athletes make the first cut
After the opening ceremony of the CrossFit Games, where representatives of all the countries competing paraded with their respective flags, Dave Castro announced the first event :
- 4 Rounds with Time Cap of 20 min
- 400m race
- 3 rope climbs without legs
- 7 squat snatches (130 lb./185 lb.)
Event 1 winners:
- Mat Fraser with 15:07min
- Tia-Clair Toomey with 16:56min
Our Spanish representative, Sara Alicia Fernández Costas, is on the verge of passing event 2 by only three places (78th in the classification).
Event 2: The top 50 advance to the second day of competition
The second WOD of the first day of competition at the 2019 CrossFit Games consisted of:
- 800m run
- 66 Kettlebell Jerks (12/16 kg)
- 132 ft. Handstand Walk
- Time Cap of 10 min
Event 2 winners:
- Mat Fraser with 5:37 min
- Danielle Brandon (USA) with 6:16 min
In this second cut, our male representative, Alexander Anasagasti , was left out of the competition by seven places.
If you follow him on social media, you already know the difficulties he had getting a visa to enter the United States a few days before traveling to Madison. But as Mr. Weak rightly says, they are the perks of the job.
From PICSIL , we congratulate Sara and Alexander for making it to Madison and giving their best in this tough competition.
Day 2: Ruck, Sprint and Mary
Yesterday (Friday, August 2) we noticed how things were getting serious.
50 men and 50 women had to give their best to reach today (Saturday, August 3) whose cut was the Top 20.
Event 3: Ruck
- 6,000m run with a weighted backpack with 20-30-40-50 lb, men and women.
- Time Cap: 40min
This event sets a precedent. It is the first time that athletes of both sexes compete with the same weights.
What is Ruck? In running 1,500m with a weight and adding 10 pounds in each remaining run until the 6 kilometers are covered.
The Top 40 move on to the next WOD.
Event 3 winners:
- Lukas Högberg (Sweden): 24:00 min
- Emily Rolfe (Canada): 27:09 min
As an anecdote, Mat Fraser was penalized with 60 seconds in his final time since one of the weights fell from his backpack in the last 1,500m of the race.
As you can see, the judges don't mess around, not even with the Fittest on Earth 2018.
Event 4: Sprint Couplet
- 172 ft. sled push
- 15/19 Bar Muscle ups
- 172 ft. sled push
- Time Cap: 6 min
The Top 30 move on to the last WOD of the day.
Event 4 winners:
- Matt McLeod (Australia): 1:27min
- Amanda Barhnart (USA): 1:29min
Event 5: Mary
- 20 min AMRAP
- 5 Handstand Push Ups
- 10 pistols
- 15 pull ups
The Top 20 move on to the competition on Saturday, the third day of the 2019 CrossFit Games.
Event 5 winners:
- Noah Ohlsen (USA): 677 reps
- Kari Pearce (USA): 696 reps

As for the girls, Sam Briggs placed 15th in the individual girls and Jen Smith reached 7th place with her team Don't Stop
Who is left out of the 2019 Games?

- Ben Smith (despite Castro's Wild Card)
- Brent Fikowski
- Jonne Koski
- Willy Georges
- Sam Lubben
- Lefteris Theofanidis (the Greek who stood out at the Open 2019)
- Bryan Hernández (the Canarian who competes for Colombia this year)
- Carmen Bosmans
- Jacqueline Dalhstrom
- Brenda Castro
- Dani Speegle (2019 American No. 1)
- Emma McQuaid
As a note, Sara Sigmundsdottir barely escapes in event 5, finishing in 20th place.
